In a bid to fight against and suppress activities of daredevil smugglers particularly at the border areas, the Seme Border Command of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 1,050 Jerry Cans of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) along the creeks and beaches within Seme and Badagry axis.

In a statement with was signed by the Public Relations officer of the Command, DSC Hussaini Abdullahi and made available to our respondent noted that in the last 24hrs of 1st December 2021, large quantities of items suspected to be Premium Motor Spirit hidden in sacks were intercepted, which contained 30 litres each of 1,050 jerry cans is equivalent to 31,500 litres having a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of 5.3 million naira.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Compt. Bello Mohammed Jibo noted that smuggling of petroleum products poses a great threat not only to the nation but also to the lives of citizens living around the border communities areas.

"The unfortunate scenario is that apart from sabotaging the efforts of Government in paying huge amount of money to subsidize the petroleum products for the benefit of Nigerians, smuggling of petroleum also poses threats to the lives of individuals and most times vehicles get burnt when an accident occurs," Jibo said.

The CAC however, commended the CGC Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd) and the Management team for logistical support by providing the Command with Four (4) Hilux vehicles to boost its operations. This is even as he reiterated the commitment of officers and men of the Command to continue the fight against smuggling and their accomplices with a higher tempo.

"Customs will continue to enforce federal Government policies with a view to suppressing smuggling, collections of appropriate revenue and facilitation of legitimate trade" Jibo concluded.
