President Tinubu'll open Funtua Inland Dry Port on Thursday

 The executive Secretary/ CEO  of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Barr Pius Akutah, and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, will on Thursday, lead President Bola Tinubu, to commission Funtua Inland Dry Port in Katsina State.

Funtua Inland Dry Port (FIDP) is an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigeria Shippers' Council. It is a public private partnership arrangement developed and operated by Equatorial Marine Oil and Gas Company Limited (EMOG).

The foundation was laid by the former president Muhammadu Buhari in February 2023.

  This was disclosed by Shippers Council  via its social media handle; that the concessionaire has completed works on the Funtua Dry Inland Port and it's set for grand commissioning by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other dignitaries on Thursday May 9th, 2024.

Akutah described the project as a pivotal moment in Nigeria's trade facilitation journey.

He said that

the development of Inland Dry Ports (IDP) across the country was an initiative of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council. The Inland Dry Ports (IDPs) are being promoted and facilitated on the basis of Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement.

The IDP being an equivalent of a sea port located in the hinterland receives containers by rail or road from the seaport for examination and clearance by customs and other authorised Agencies. It has all the loading and off-loading equipment needed to handle containers.

Typically, an IDP brings shipping services to the door step of shippers, assists in decongesting the seaports and make them more user friendly and provides the impetus to revive and modernise the railway as primary mode for long distance haulage. Above all, it helps to reduce the over-all costs of cargo to hinterland locations as well as to landlocked countries.

The Council also facilitated the development of five solicited and unsolicited IDPs in Ibadan, Oyo State; Dagbolu, Osun State; Onitsha, Anambra State; Lolo, Kebbi State and Benin, Edo State. These IDPs are currently at different levels of completion.

The highlights on the IDP sites are as follows;

• The Kaduna Inland Dry Port was commissioned by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) on 4th January 2018. In effect, the Kaduna Dry Port is the first Inland Dry Port in Nigeria.

• Declaration of Dala Inland Dry Port as a Port of Origin and Final Destination by the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo on 5th August, 2022 and Commissioning of Dala Inland Dry Port by the President and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari on 30th January, 2023.

   iii.   Declaration of Funtua Inland Dry Port as a Port of Origin and Final Destination by the Honourable Minister of Transportation on 2nd February, 2023.
