Shippers Council Convenes Industry Stakeholders To Address Rising Operational Costs

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria - February 8, 2025: In a bid to tackle the
escalating costs affecting the shipping industry, the Nigerian Shippers' Council, NSC convened a meeting of industry stakeholders to address the issue.

The meeting, held in Lagos was with the aim at addressing the pressing challenges of rising operational costs and its impact on the sector.

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the NSC, Pius Akutah, emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of tariffs in line with current economic realities. 

"The meeting is a strategic move to foster collaboration among key industry experts, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the sector and positively impacting the national economy," he said.

According to the verified Facebook page of the Council, Ukeyima assured participants that the meeting's outcome would drive economic sustainability while safeguarding stakeholders' interests. He noted that the rising operational costs have led to increased shipping expenses, prompting operators to call for a review of their tariffs.

The Chairman of the Shipping Lines Association, Boma Alabi, acknowledged the crucial role of the Council and urged swift intervention regarding new tariffs and charges that may impact service delivery. 

"The Council's intervention is critical in addressing the challenges facing the industry," he said.

The meeting brought together representatives from shipping companies, terminal operators, freight forwarders, consolidators, truckers, shippers' associations, manufacturers' associations, and government agencies. The stakeholders exchanged insights on improving service delivery and ensuring efficiency within the sector.

The meeting resulted in a consensus among stakeholders to work together to address the rising operational costs. The NSC agreed to facilitate a comprehensive review of tariffs, while industry operators pledged to provide data and support to ensure the success of the initiative.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to lead to a reduction in shipping costs, improved efficiency, and enhanced competitiveness in the industry. The NSC has pledged to continue engaging with stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the agreed-upon measures.
