Shippers’ Council Orders Suspension Of New Shipping Tariffs

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, March 21, 2026 — The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC has directed all shipping lines and their agencies to immediately suspend the implementation of recently approved tariffs, citing concerns over their timing, structure, and potential impact on port users and the wider logistics chain.

In a statement issued Friday, the Council, which serves as the economic regulator of Nigeria’s port and shipping sector, mandated operators to revert to the tariff regime that was in force prior to the increase.

The NSC warned that any deviation from this directive would constitute a breach of regulatory compliance and attract sanctions under existing laws.

The suspension comes amid ongoing consultations with critical stakeholders, as the Council seeks to safeguard fair competition, transparency, and stability in the maritime sector.

A statement issued by the Council noted, “It is necessary to halt further implementation pending the conclusion of comprehensive consultations and regulatory review.”

The NSC emphasized its commitment to protecting cargo interests and promoting an efficient and equitable maritime transport system. A definitive position on the tariff issue will be communicated once stakeholder engagements and internal reviews are completed.

This move is expected to provide temporary relief to port users and logistics operators who had raised concerns about the financial burden of the new charges.
