Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria – March 21, 2026: The Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria, APFFLON has cautioned industry stakeholders against celebrating too soon following the Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s, NSC announcement halting the recent shipping tariff hike.
In a statement signed by it's National President, Frank Ogunojemite and made available to Harboursandports.com, noted that the suspension is a “tactical retreat under pressure” rather than a genuine resolution, warning that shipping companies may still attempt to impose charges through the backdoor.
According to him, “We have seen this pattern before. Announcements are made, but in reality, shipping companies quietly proceed with implementation, exploiting weak enforcement and regulatory gaps. This must not happen again,” the association declared.
The group outlined its non-negotiable stance, insisting on: No implementation of tariff increases in any guise; No hidden or disguised fees; Full compliance by all shipping companies and Immediate sanctions for defaulters.
APFFLON stressed that arbitrary tariff hikes would worsen inflation, strangle Nigerian businesses, and undermine the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The association framed the issue as more than a maritime dispute, calling it “an economic battle for Nigeria’s survival.”
The body urged freight forwarders and stakeholders nationwide to remain vigilant at ports, resist illegal charges, and report non-compliant companies. It also challenged the NSC to move beyond public statements and enforce compliance decisively, warning that anything less would confirm fears of regulatory weakness.
“Freight forwarders will not sit back and watch the system be manipulated again. Enough is enough. Compliance is not optional,” APFFLON’s president stated.
